1. How do you think of the foreign teachers for English training?

    The change taken place in China is much faster than that in any countries in the world and the change will be accelerated with China’s entry into the WTO. People with good fundamental English skill will have a distinct advantage in the fast-paced economy of the 21^st century. So many English training schools has sprung up. The foreign English teachers are warmly welcome in the English training market. The advertisement for these schools to attract students is that all the lessons are committed by native English speakers. The same textbook, the same class hour, but the native English speakers as teachers, such a difference will overcharge you RMB120.

   Foreign English teachers’ salaries are much higher than Chinese English teachers, especially the teacher who come from North America. They ask for more than RMB150 per hour with the reason that “I’m from America”.

The quality of the English teachers is not well regularized since foreign English teachers are in great need in the training market. Some of them are not qualified to be a teacher. Nowadays, most of foreign teachers in training school are students, travelers who come from Russia, Eastern Europe, Nigeria and Kenya etc. Some of them speak poor English. “They are confident enough to stand at the platform to teach English, just because they have a big nose,” Say a Chinese English teacher. “The training school don’t care about whether their pronunciation is good or bad, whether they have teaching experience or competence".

In fact, in foreign country, only does a person has a certificate in TEFL (Teach English As a Foreign Language) or TESL (Teach English As a Second Language), he/she is permitted to teach English in non-English speaking country. In our country, if a foreigner has an expert certificate that authorized by China State Bureau of Foreign Experts, can be an English teacher in China. Foreigners, who have the certificate of TEFL or TESL, or who have a Bachelor degree or higher educational background, and have 2-year teaching experience, can apply the expert certificate.

      At present, in Chinese training market, most of foreigners have none of the above certificates. Our question is: Is the foreign teacher very important for us to learn English? How do you think of the foreign English teachers in Chinese training school?
